Glendale started as a small town back in the 1880's with the first large project being the Arizona Canal Project. Once there was water, William H. Bartlett started a 640 acre fruit farm, a main house and the Sahuaro Ranch which consisted of 13 other buildings in the project. Once the first project was completed, there was a need for the residents, who had now owned a home in Glendale, to have the need for schools for their children. The first grammer school, Glendale Grammer School, was built in 1895.

Messinger, one of the first graduates of Stanford University, opened the Glendale Library in 1895 with 400 of his own personal books.
