80 acres of land was purchased from the federal government by Dr. Alexander John Chandler in thre late 1800's. He was credited for assisting in building an early system of canals.
Dr. Chandler owned 18,000 acres of land by the 1900's . He was able to obtain enough water to subdivide his ranch and then drew up a town-site map. This was the start of the sale of Chandler Ranch sites.

The first grand opening of a hotel in chandler was the Hotel San Marcos on November 22, 1913. Governor George P. Hunt and Vice President Thomas Marshall were amongst the 500 guests present. The hotel was an "award winner" and become a very popular place for tourists and visitors.
Cotton, grains and alfalfa were the main crops in Chandler. Also, the farmers raised cattle, sheep and, ostriches.
Cotton became the most common and profitable crop in no time. Goodyear Tire Company soon leased 8,000 acres south of town and built the town of Goodyear.
By 1920, there were already 1,000 residents in the fast growing town of Chandler. The town's roads were paved. Most of the residents had automobiles and used the streets regularly. The water and sewage systems were updated as the town developed.
Chandler's population doubled by 1950. On May 24, 1954, the Chandler was upgraded from town to City.. Agriculture is still a vital but manufacturing and electronics have risen and become as vital to the City of Chandler.
The Center for the Arts, new parks, restaurants, retail centers, as well as family festivals, the Ostrich Festival, make Chandler a popular draw for many visitors.
